10”x 17” (printed area) original artist printed multi-block linocut.
In traditional Ukrainian culture floral motifs are very prevalent, particularly in embroidery. The purpose of embroidery on clothing is said to be two-fold, one – purely as decorative, the second – as protective. Poppies protected our ancestors from failure and evil forces by warding off the ‘evil eye’. Beyond protection poppies are the flowers of dreams, beauty and youth, which is where the print gets its name “Мрія” – Dream.
